About

Sigurður Flosason is an Icelandic saxophonist and composer, widely regarded as one of the most active and influential jazz figures in the Nordic region. His extensive career, marked by versatility and a commitment to melodic invention, is complemented by significant contributions to music education in Iceland.

Career and Musical Style

Flosason’s comprehensive musical background includes studies in both classical and jazz performance. He holds diplomas from The Reykjavik College of Music and advanced degrees (Bachelor’s and Master’s) from Indiana University in the U.S., where he studied under notable figures like David Baker.

Since returning to Iceland in 1989, he has maintained an active international performing and recording schedule, contributing to over 30 albums. His discography spans a wide stylistic spectrum, including original compositions, jazz standards, experimental works, and orchestral collaborations with ensembles such as the Icelandic Symphony Orchestra. His playing is recognized for its lyrical quality, technical control, and a tone that is described as variable and multifaceted. As a composer, his work often draws inspiration from the natural themes and landscapes of his native Iceland.

Beyond performance, Flosason has held leading roles in music education, including heading the jazz department at the F.I.H. School of Music, and is a frequent conductor of the Reykjavik Big Band. His contributions to composition and performance have been recognized with multiple Icelandic Music Awards.

Role in the Hellkvist-Flosason Quartet

In the Hellkvist-Flosason Quartet, Flosason serves as a primary melodic voice and co-leader alongside Andreas Hellkvist. His eloquent saxophone lines provide a crucial counterpoint to the Hammond B3 organ, driving the performance of their shared original repertoire. He continues his long-standing collaboration with fellow Icelandic musicians Andrés Þór (guitar) and Einar Scheving (drums), forming a cohesive and dynamically responsive ensemble dedicated to contemporary Nordic jazz.
