About

Einar Scheving is an Icelandic drummer and composer recognized for his subtle rhythmic precision, musicality, and deep commitment to the jazz ensemble. He is a highly regarded figure in the Nordic jazz community, known for providing a foundation that is both solid and dynamically responsive to the improvisers around him.

Throughout his career, Einar Scheving has established himself as a versatile player within the Icelandic music landscape, contributing to a wide range of jazz and contemporary projects. His drumming style is defined by exceptional technique, clear articulation, and a strong, consistent sense of time and groove. His approach often emphasizes texture and harmonic awareness, making his contribution feel integral to the overall composition rather than merely supporting the pulse.

Scheving has also gained recognition as a bandleader and composer, releasing critically noted albums under his own name that showcase his thoughtful compositional skills and sophisticated grasp of modern jazz aesthetics.

Scheving is a long-term collaborator with many of Iceland’s leading jazz musicians, including saxophonist Sigurður Flosason and guitarist Andrés Þór. In the Hellkvist-Flosason Quartet, he forms the essential rhythmic core alongside Þór. His work is crucial to the band’s sound, anchoring the powerful dynamics of Andreas Hellkvist’s Hammond B3 organ while providing the necessary rhythmic flexibility for Flosason’s and Þór’s melodic explorations.

His disciplined and highly musical drumming ensures that the quartet’s repertoire—which focuses on original compositions—swings compellingly, whether performing intense hard-bop or subtle ballads. Einar Scheving remains an important and active voice in contemporary Scandinavian jazz.
